Over the years Leo has received a number of Certificates &
Accommodations, one of the highest honours, being chosen by an Eighth
Grade student as being an "Outstanding Person Produced by My
Constituency".
My Constituency has produced outstanding people of which Mr. Leo
Pinder is one. He was born at Spanish Wells on May 25,1922. As a teenager
he was appointed assistant teacher at Spanish Wells All Age School. At
the age of nineteen he was transferred to Harbour Island school as
principal.
His early adult years were spent in Nassau as Captain of the
freight vessel m/v"Noel Roberts". He was among the first persons to build
fishing vessels with live fish wells and with engines in them. He had the
fishing vessels which were named the "Sea Bird"and"Sea Star" built. The
"Sea Bird" was built in 1952 and the "Sea Star" in 1954. He bought
another boat named the "Sea Pride" in 1957. Mr. Pinder had this fishing
fleet until the 1960's. Then he sold them and opened the business known
as Ronald's Service Centre,selling directly to foreign markets. Ronald's
Service Centre now has a large and modern processing and freezing plant
and is one of the largest crawfish processing and exporting facilities in
the Bahamas. They have an additional part added to the business at the
present time. This part is into the lumber and steel industry. It has
been prosperous up to this time and hopes to continue to be prosperous
in the future.
Mr. Pinder served on the Board of Works for approximately fifteen
years. He was also on the School Commitee for twelve and a half years. He
has been the Justice of the Peace for about thirty years and he still
holds that position. Mr. Pinder has also played an important role in
politics for about thirty years. He was also personally invited to attend
a ball given in some people's honour at the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce
in April of this year.
Later on in his life on June 11,1977 he was given an award and
honoured by the Queen of England for good services rendered in his
constituency. To me he is the most outstanding person my constituency has
produced.
